365 Movies: Kiss and Make Up Review

Kiss and Make Up stars Cary Grant, Genevieve Tobin, Helen Mack, and Edward Everett Horton in this 1934 hilariously funny comedy. The comedy is about a plastic surgeon, whose goal in life is to beautify women and to make them feel and think they are beautiful. Once the women are beautified, they are no longer real people, but instead superficial fakes. When Cary beautifies his latest client, his heart soon falls for her. They soon marry but he finds out, that she isn't everything, he had hoped to be. I really loved this movie and I loved the chemistry between Helen and Cary. Genevieve Tobin was so hilariously funny in this movie and seriously, the lady is so underrated!!!!!!

365 Movies: Wedding Present Review

The film stars Cary Grant, Joan Bennett, and Conrad Nagel in this 1936 comedy. The film is about two newspaper writers, who plan to marry one another, when one of them can't seem to take anything seriously until he gets a worthwhile position at work. With his new job, Charlie becomes almost tyrannical with his new job and Rusty just can't take it anymore, so she ends up leaving and goes to New York, where she meets Dodacker, who is everything Charlie isn't. They become engaged and then Charlie finds out, and he wants to have his love back, so he goes chasing after her. A slew of chaos occurs after he tries to win her back. There were some funny moments in the movie, but overall not a favorite Cary Grant movie. I felt it wasn't as good as his other films.

365 Movies: Wings in the Dark Review

The film stars Myrna Loy, Cary Grant, and Roscoe Karns in the 1935 melodrama. The film is about an aviator(played by Cary Grant), who ends up getting himself in an accident, on the cusp on going on a trip. While recovering from the incident, the aviator finds assistance and love from an aviatrix(played Myrna Loy), who helps him through his blindness. When they first meet, Cary's character Ken Gordon dislikes Myrna's character Sheila Mason, but blindness takes him for a curve, she is the one person he can rely on. I enjoyed the film immensely especially seeing Myrna and Cary in their first movie together(they had made a total of three films together, which included "The Bachelor and Bobby-Soxer" and "Mr.Blandings Builds his Dream House"). They not only had the chemistry and spark but they work so well together, when they are in a movie together. Cary comes second for me, right after William Powell as Myrna's best leading man. Another thing that I liked about the movie, was Cary and the dog. He and the dog were so sweet to watch!!!

365 Movies: Bluebeard's Eighth Wife Review

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife stars Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, Edward Everett Horton, and David Niven in this 1938 screwball comedy. The film is about a woman getting mixed up with an American Multi-Millionaire, who has been married seven times before. He doesn't tell her until the day of the wedding, so she throws him for a loop instead. If they are to be divorced, she'll get a nice settlement but no divorce is in sight but there romance is quite strained. The film is delightfully hilarious and Claudette and Gary make a charming couple together and their rifts together are too funny to not enjoy watching.

365 Movies: Boys' Night Out Review

Boys' Night Out stars Kim Novak, James Garner, Tony Randall, Howard Duff, Howard Morris, Janet Blair, Patti Page, Anne Jeffreys, and Jessie Royce Landis in this 60's comedy. The film is about four men who get themselves a pad, where they can have there secret affairs at. While the boys have one plan, the lady has another. She's doing a test on the men and is studying their behavior, without their acknowledgement. I loved... loved.... the husbands and even the single man in the group. They were so hilarious and each of them, had such crazy lines. My favorite characters were all of the men, they were too fun to watch! This is probably my favorite Kim Novak movie, she really is funny in this movie.

365 Movies: I Met Him in Paris Review

I Met Him in Paris stars Claudette Colbert, Melvyn Douglas, and Robert Young in this very goofy screwball comedy from 1937. The film is about a woman, who is about to spend two weeks in Paris and leave her beau in the States and live life freely for a bit. While in Paris, Kay(Colbert) meets two men-- George(Douglas) and Gene(Young), who both are interested in her. One of them, is married but hides the truth from Kay until the end, when she accidentally bumps into his wife. The other, is a sarcastic writer who tries to woo her with his charming ways. I absolutely loved this movie!!! The rivalry between George and Gene was an absolute delight, they were so cute together as a team. The film really belonged to the two of them. There were many laugh out loud moments in the film and I really couldn't help but enjoy the film. The other thing, I loved seeing was Lee Bowman and I loved that he was just 23 years old in the movie, how cute!! He was the youngest in the group of men!! Lol!

365 Movies: A Christmas Carol Review

A Christmas Carol stars Reginald Owen, Gene Lockhart, and Kathleen Lockhart in this Christmas classic. The film is about an elderly who resents the happiness that others, feel during the Christmas holiday and shows his dislike and hatred towards everyone until the three spirits visit him and things completely change for him. I haven't seen many versions of this but I have read the book and the movie is a tad off from the book. There are a lot of scenes, that were added to the movie, that wasn't in the book. I absolutely love the story of A Christmas Carol and it's most definitely a classic in my head. I loved seeing each spirit come to visit him- from past, to present, to future spirits, it's so very intriguing. I would be utterly fascinated to see my own version of A Christmas Carol, it would definitely be fun to watch. Reginald was marvelous as Scrooge but I'm very excited for next year, to see Alastair Sim as Scrooge.

365 Movies: Christmas in July Review

Christmas in July stars Dick Powell, Ellen Drew, and William DeMarest in this Preston Sturges' comedy. The film is about a young couple, who are in money troubles but hope and pray that a contest will bring them, the money they feel they deserve. Dick Powell's Jimmy MacDonald is mistakenly announced as the winner and ends up going on a money spree because he believes he is the winner of the contest. Though the film was wonderful to watch, I felt it wasn't as great as Preston Sturges' other films such as "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" or "The Lady Eve". I'd also like to add though, any movie that Preston Sturges directed or produced makes me want to watch over and over again. Maybe, it's because I'm extremely tired and my attention isn't completely there or maybe I'm just not interested, who knows but I will definitely give this movie a second chance.

365 Movies: Wait Until Dark Review

Wait Until Dark stars Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin, and Richard Crenna in this 1967 thriller. The film is about a blind woman, who is unknowingly mixed up with a group of men, who are looking for a doll that is filled with heroin. The doll is hidden inside the blind woman's apartment, and the three men are determined to get the doll but Susy Hendrix isn't going down without a fight. Seriously, it's difficult to pick which actor was my favorite because they were all perfect. Richard Crenna, Alan Arkin, and of course Audrey impressed me to no end.... especially Alan. He scared the living daylights out of me, there is no saneness in a man like that, he was absolutely terrifying to watch and my heart was pounding so loudly, when he was terrorizing Audrey's Susy. It's so interesting how Alan Arkin's character plays upon her fears and terrifies her to death. This was such a scary film and if I were in that situation, I'd probably die of fright.

365 Movies: Miracle on 34th Street Review

Miracle on 34th Street stars Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O' Hara, John Payne, and Natalie in this delightfully wonderful Christmas classic. The film is about a woman and her daughter, who are the realists of the world until an old man, claiming to be Santa Claus pops into their lives. John Payne and Edmund Gwenn are the believers of the world, who never give up hope but the two girls are quite skeptic about this supposed Santa Claus, and constantly keep their guard up in fear of getting hurt. Edmund Gwenn is the most enjoyable thing in this entire movie, he brings belief and hope to the world, without much hesitation in his voice. I adored... absolutely adored both John Payne and Natalie Wood in this classic, they were both so charming to watch. Maureen O' Hara completely annoyed me in the beginning of the film with her skepticism towards Edmund but as the film progresses, her skepticism soon fades. Though, I did like "It's a Wonderful Life" more, I do think this is considered a Christmas Classic and I look forward to seeing it again next year.

365 Movies: Meet Me in St.Louis Review

Meet Me in St.Louis stars Judy Garland, Mary Astor, Margaret O' Brien, and a gazillion other talented actors and actresses, that I greatly enjoyed watching. The film is about a family, living in St. Louis during the early 1900's and what their lives are like through the seasons. Everything about this film is wonderful- from the songs, to the acting, to the storyline, nothing is out of touch. This is probably one of my favorite Judy films and she really shines in it. She is so delightfully charming throughout the entire film, that it's hard to not like her. My favorite song that Judy sings, is probably "Have yourself a Merry little Christmas", every time I hear her sing that song, I get chills. That song is utter brilliance and I could listen to it, every December. Aside from Judy, Harry Davenport and Leon Ames were absolutely great to watch! Margaret O' Brien was as cute as usual and I adore the part, when she and Judy sing "The Cake Walk", it is too adorable for words. This is a definite recommended movie, if you haven't seen it, go see it now. You won't regret it!

I leave you with Judy singing ''Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas", Enjoy!

365 Movies: Scaramouche Review

Scaramouche stars Stewart Granger, Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, and Mel Ferrer. The film is about a man named Andre Moreau(played by Stewart), who after witnessing his brother's killing, seeks revenge on the man who committed the killing, Noel(played by Mel). Being untrained in fencing, Andre trains to avenge his brother's death. In the midst of the film, Andre is involved with a woman named Leonore(played by Eleanor),who is in love with Andre but fed up with the way, things are turning out, Leonore often times gets temperamental and angry with him. He also gets involved with a young woman named Aline de Gavrillac de Bourbon(played by Janet) but in the beginning, his heart belongs to Leonore. As the film progresses, his love for the fiery Leonore soon fizzles, and his love for Aline heats up. The film is very well organized and keeps you entertained from beginning to end. I loved seeing Mel play the villain in the film and thought his performance was quite extraordinary. This was the first movie, I had seen Stewart Granger in, and I quite liked him in it. I thought he played the role of Andre Moreau, excellently. Eleanor was marvelous as the fiery redheaded Leonore, and her performances are always wonderful to see. I wasn't too happy with the ending of the film but overall, it was a very entertaining film to watch.

365 Movies: Woman in White Review

Woman in White stars Alexis Smith, Eleanor Parker, Gig Young, and Sydney Greenstreet. The film is about a mysterious woman in white, who tries to warn a former acquaintance, of danger that is soon to come to her. Eleanor Parker stars as both the woman in white and as Laura Fairlie, a young innocent who is unaware of the dangers to come to her life. Eleanor plays both roles excellently and her performance is probably the best in the whole film. Second to her, but not all to far is Sydney Greenstreet, who plays the villain of the story. Every time I see him or Eleanor, I find myself consistently impressed with their acting. I love that both of them were able to do any genre so well( in case point- Sydney in "Christmas in Connecticut" and Eleanor in "A Hole in the Head".) They were just so very versatile and I look forward to seeing them in more films. I also greatly enjoyed watching Agnes Moorehead in the film, even though she appears later in the film, she's still wonderful to watch. I was disappointed with Alexis Smith's performance in the film, after I had seen her superb performance in "The Constant Nymph", I was expecting more greatness to be but that was not to happen in this movie. I felt that she was quite stiff and cold, without many emotions to show, while her performance in "The Constant Nymph" was amazing, this is a definite disappointment to view.

The film was a good little mystery, that I could easily see myself viewing again(if just for Eleanor's performance).

365 Movies: Son of Lassie Review

Son of Lassie(1945) stars Peter Lawford, Donald Crisp, June Lockhart, Nigel Bruce, and of course Lassie and Laddie. The film centers around Lassie's son, Laddie who lacks the same determination as his Mother but as the film progresses, Laddie proves to be just as tough as his mother. In the beginning, you see Laddie as a young pup with no skills but as he grows up, he's determined to be a loyal and trustworthy companion. Peter Lawford is the owner of both Laddie and Lassie and portrays a sweetness and loyalty towards both dogs, that you almost believe they are his dogs.

I have to give enormous credit to the dogs in this film, for how well they were trained. It's amazing to see a dog growl at the enemy but stand by his owner is so amazing. Those dogs were so well trained and they had the ability to perform everything they were asked to do with such finesse and easiness. Sometimes, they made the actors look bad(in case point- June Lockhart didn't do much for me in this film).

Even though, Peter Lawford appears first in the credits, he actually doesn't appear all that much in the film. Of course, the film belongs to Laddie.

The film wasn't all too bad but I found myself more amazed at how well trained the dogs were, than anything else.

It's a good movie for kids to watch and appreciate, much more so than what is out now.

365 Movies: Happy Anniversary Review

Happy Anniversary(1959) stars David Niven and Mitzi Gaynor who are celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary, when everything seems to go awry. Their marriage goes from hot to cold within minutes and you see more arguments than you do seeing them apologize to one another.

I adore both David Niven and Mitzi Gaynor but in this, they are much better separated. Mitzi dazzles on her own but with David as her husband, I don't know, I feel like they don't belong as a couple in the movie. David is a genius but not with Mitzi as his wife, they just don't seem to have the chemistry nor spark that makes a couple worth watching.

The most worth while performance to watch in this movie was Carl Reiner, whom every time I see him in a movie, he makes me smile. He has one of those personalities, that makes me smile from ear to ear.

Personally for me, I wasn't a big fan of the movie. I'd skip on it, next time it comes on tcm.

Review for tomorrow- Son of Lassie

The Julie and Julia Idea- Movie Style!

The other day, I watched the film "Julie and Julia"(2009) and an idea suddenly popped in my head while watching the movie. For those of you, who don't know what the movie is about, let me explain- Julie(played by Amy Adams) comes up with the Julie/Julia project, where she plans to make every recipe(524 recipes!) that is in Julia Child's(played by Meryl Streep) book 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' in 365 days.

Well my idea, instead of making a ton of food- I'm going to be watching a movie every day for 365 days. To be completely honest, I've been watching a movie every day since August 1st 2009 but I never even thought to put it on my blog. What a goof I am! On the side, I will be writing all of the movies I've seen so far and then I'll be adding the ones, I'm planning to watch. My rules for this challenge are-

1. Any movie is acceptable- New or Old doesn't matter!
2. Shorts are allowed except they must be longer than 30 minutes.
3. If I do watch shorts, I have to watch more than 1.
4. A movie has to be watched everyday, even on Holidays!
5.After watching the movie, I have to put up on the sidebar, which movie I'll watch tomorrow, so guys and gals are updated.

6. After each viewing, I am to write the film on the side bar and include the year the movie came out.

7. From now on, I will write a review on the film that I watched, so it kind of proves to you all that I watched the film. (I will either post it on as a blog post or on the side bar, I haven't decided yet)

8. I can watch the movie anywhere! It can be on the computer, at the movie theater, or on the tv, as long as I'm watching it, it counts!

9. I can change what movie I'm watching before the day is done but it must be watched.

10. On the sidebar, my little feature 'What's on the Menu Tonight?' will feature the film, that is to be viewed and the movie poster and year.(I've had that feature for a couple of months now, but in case you didn't see, now you know)

11. More than 1 movie can be watched in a day, it doesn't necessarily mean I have to watch more than 1.

12. Repeated films(meaning I've seen them before) are alright to be watched.

So there are the rules and my goal is to watch 365 movies in 365 days. So far 138 movies have been watched since I started on August 1st and I have 227 movies to go! I will be writing down the movies I've seen so far on the side bar. WARNING though, I've seen some pretty bad movies. :P

Ta-Ta for now!
