Weekly Review: Marlene by Charlotte Chandler

I was recently given the chance to read the newly released "Marlene", by Charlotte Chandler. I was more than excited to start reading this book, because before I read this, I didn't know much about the actress. The book is an easy read and through the biography, I almost felt like I was sitting right there, with Ms. Dietrich. Her life was so fascinating and interesting, and the biography shined a different on the actress. While sometimes, selfish(but only towards her looks) Marlene had more affection and consideration for others, than many celebrities of her or of now. What she did during World War II is completely remarkable to me, and shows what an incredible human being, Dietrich. Through this biography, I was able to see the real Dietrich and I have so much respect for her. What an incredible person!

Weekly Review: I Dream of Jeannie Season 1 (1965)

For those of you, who have never watched "I Dream of Jeannie", let me explain to you what it's about. Astronaut, Tony Nelson(Larry Hagman) is stranded on a deserted island, when he finds a bottle. Rubbing it to see what it is, Tony has discovered he's unleashed a genie(Barbara Eden). When she escapes from her bottle, Jeannie feels obligated to help Tony out, so she gets him a helicopter in order for him to return home. The only problem is, Jeannie falls very quickly for her new master and she can't ever leave him alone.

After fully watching the entire first season of "I Dream of Jeannie", I can officially say this is by far the funniest show I've ever seen. There isn't one thing, I would change about this show. It's clever, funny, quirky, romantic, and utterly charming. Jeannie and Tony's flirtation is so cute and fun to watch, and seriously watching that, I kept wishing they would just marry in the first episode. They were so electrifying together!!!!

I also love and adore, Colonel Peterson(Barton Maclane)Dr. Alfred Bellows(Hayden Rorke), and Major Roger Healey(Bill Dailey). Speaking of Roger Healey, he has got to be the funniest sidekick ever!!!

Weekly Movie Review: Irene(1940)

*I'm going to try and review a movie or television show every week or every other week. I'm really trying my best, so keeping my fingers crossed. :)

With a free day off of work, I decided to catch up on my movies. One that I've been interested in seeing for some time, has been the 1940 film, "Irene" starring Anna Neagle and Ray Milland. I hadn't heard about the movie until it popped on TCM and that's when my interest peeked. Anna Neagle plays Irene O' Dare, a simple Irish girl who picks up odd jobs, when she meets the dashingly handsome Don Marshall(Milland). The two instantly hit it off, but Marshall's good friend, Bob Vincent(Alan Marshal) seems to fall under Irene's spell as well. Don keeps insisting he's not interested in Irene romantically, but moments away from Irene, Don knows he loves her. It's a fun and charming film, but there were some glitches for me.

1. What was up with the random singing and dancing bit??? It's not a musical, so why does Neagle's character, all of a sudden start singing in one single part, and then in another part, dances alone??? I don't know, but I found that quite odd.

2. The Wardrobe seemed to me, to be quite ordinary and plain. The females go all crazy over Irene's attire but it seems plain looking. I don't know, but I wasn't impressed by the looks.

3. Anna Neagles hairstyle really didn't work for her face, it should have been up more in my opinion.

Rating for the Film: B

When I cut and dyed my hair a little after my 21st birthday last year, I was bit worried. My first worry was that the cut would be terrible for me, and my second problem was what others would think. The reactions overall were good, and with the few people asking me what in the world was I thinking, everything was just fine.

Now it appears after months, of having the short red headed look, could I possibly be venturing away from the color???? NO! Lol, I've decided to stick with it, but I'm taking inspiration from some of my favorite ladies. So take a gander at who is my inspiration!

The Unfortunate Luck I Have...

You know, when you have your heart set on watching a particular movie and then the day finally comes for you to watch it, and then something happens to prevent you from seeing it? Well, that happened to me, the one movie, I've been dying to see for about two years now is the 1945 film, "Pillow to Post" starring Ida Lupino and William Prince. Since I became a fan of both Lupino and Prince, I've been anxiously awaiting the moment for TCM to put this film into their line-up, and when it happened on the 25th of March, I was elated. The only problem is, I only have one television and the person watching tv, deleted the movie on me. Geez, my luck on seeing this movie sucks a lot! When it previously came on, I ended up forgetting to record it but hopefully TCM will feel sorry for me, and add this film to their line-up because I'm still anxiously awaiting to see it, even if it's a silly romantic comedy. :)

Susan Hayward Month: Smash-Up: The Story of A Woman! Review

Smash-Up stars Susan as Angie Evans, a nightclub who meets and falls for fellow singer Ken Conway(Bowman). Angie sacrifices everything for Ken, and it ends up putting a strain on her personally. When Ken's career starts to launch, Angie starts to crumble. Her one escapism from the constant avoidance from her husband, is alcohol. After Angie's been hitting the bottle too many times, the marriage between and Ken is over and Ken looks to take their child away from her. With the stress of her marriage ending, and the fear that she could loose her child, Angie sinks to the bottom. When the worst possible thing to happen to Angie occurs, thats when she realizes she needs to clean up her act.

It's not a terrible movie, but it's directed poorly. It begins quite quickly and then stalls for the rest of the film. The cast is superb but while watching, I couldn't imagine Marsha Hunt as the lovestruck secretary, who attempts to break Ken and Angie's marriage. To me, she never came off as a vixen, more like the sweet innocent. Susan was marvelous but I preferred her performance in "I Want to Live" more.

Grade: C

Susan Hayward Month: I Want to Live! Review

I Want to Live! is based on the life of Barbara Graham, who was convicted of murdering Mabel Monahan, a Californian widow. From the minute Barbara starts off in the world, it seems her life is meant to be in shambles. Her Mother was a troublesome teen, when she had Barbara, and when Barbara was just 2 years old, her Mother was sent to reformatory school. She didn't know her parents very well, and grew up with little knowledge of them.

When Barbara grew up, things just became worse. Barbara was heavily into drugs by her teens and was prostituting as a mean for some extra money. She had been arrested several times on lesser charges but in 1953, her fate was sealed. Barbara along with two accomplices were arrested for the murder of Mabel Monahan, a 64 year old widow. Her two accomplices, Emmett Perkins and Jack Santo both accused Barbara of the murder, in which they tried to protect themselves, but all three would get the gas chamber.

On June 3rd 1955, Barbara along with her accomplices were put to death. Barbara was 31 years old, two weeks shy of her 32nd birthday.

Susan plays the role of Barbara Graham so convincingly and real, at times, I felt sympathetic towards her character.

With this being my "first" real Susan Hayward movie, I really thought she was amazing. She was sarcastic, sad, charming, and honest. She certainly deserved to win the Oscar for her performance as Barbara Graham; truly amazing! The film had this documentary feel to it, and I felt like I was there watching the actual events occur. Nothing was too stagy and the performances were raw and real. Supporting players were fantastic as well, even though I never heard of any of them.

Grade: B

Susan Hayward Month

Before, you jump to the conclusion that I had forgotten about poor little Susan Hayward, you are wrong. For the past couple of weeks, I've been working on finishing a particular season 1(it's Sons of Anarchy; not my type of show at all! lol) and I wanted to finish that up first, before I started my posts on Susan. I have about three more episodes left, and then for the rest of this month, I will be posting on Susan.

When I originally came up with this series, I was going to do actors/actresses that I would randomly pick and just talk about their career, etc. Many of them, I knew but now I've decided to embark on a different route. For these posts, I'm going to be introducing myself to an actor/actress, that I'm not too familiar with. My first pick was Susan Hayward and with hearing so much good about her, I'm excited to watch and learn more about her. The only movies of hers, that I have seen have been "I Married a Witch" and "Beau Geste", with her roles in those films, being very small. So I'm expanding my interests and opening up my views, so that I'm able to learn about Old Hollywood.

As for the reason as to why I'm watching Sons of Anarchy, its because I'm trying to watch a different series each month. My older brother asked me, a while back to watch it, and I kept delaying it, but now I'm watching it. It's actually not that bad, a bit foul mouthed for my taste, but overall it's a pretty good show. Don't worry, next month's show is lot tamer, it's The Mary Tyler Moore Show. :)

So don't fret, a post will be on its way, within a couple of days.

With Christmas and work taking up most of my time, I didn't even get a chance to remember, that on December 1st, my blog turned 2 years old. It's amazing to think, that it has been around since December of 2008. I really am so happy to still be sticking around here and I will make 2011, an even bigger and better year for my blog. Humphrey Bogart: The Essential Collection

When I was given the task of reviewing the EPIC Humphrey Bogart: The Essential Collection, I was a little hesitant. The collection holds 24 of Humphrey's films and also includes the amazing documentary, "Brothers Warner", which I highly recommend. After some thought, I decided to give it a go. The film really shows Humphrey from his early days in this 1930's, to his all-time during the 1940's.

A lot of the films, show Humphrey as a dark and twisted character, who tries to do what is right in the end. I really liked the array of films, that the collections provides but I must admit, I wish they had included "It All Came True", where you honestly see a funnier side of him. Overall, I really loved the films, that were included.

I think the most shocking for me, was the 1937 film "Black Legion", where Bogart joins a white supremacist group and realizes after joining, the repercussions of joining. The film is dark but at the same time, thoroughly interesting. Bogart's performance is solid and heartbreaking, and it's a film, that is incredibly underrated.

You do end up, getting a lot of known Bogart films, such as "Casablanca"(His Most Famous), "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", and "The Maltese Falcon". With her later roles, you saw Humphrey really develop his own brand of acting. He was a first of his kind. He was similar to Cagney but with an even moodier and darker side to him.

This collection is the ultimate in Bogart films, and shows what an amazing actor he truly was. From his early days, when he was playing side parts in films like "Dark Victory" and "Kid Galahad" to his more stellar and well known performances in films like "To Have and Have Not" and "High Sierra".

I should also mention, that also included is a booklet on Bogart's films, and pictures and letters about Bogie. I was definitely drooling when I got this in the mail. The collection is amazing and it really is one of the best collections, I've seen in a really long time.

Thanks to WB for sending the collection my way, I thoroughly enjoyed eacoh and every film. I was originally going to review each and every film, included in the collection, but I figured I would just comment on my favorite out of the collection. Of course, I didn't mention above, but one of my favorites of the collection was "The Roaring Twenties", which starred Cagney, Bogart, Lane, and Lynn. It's probably my favorite gangster film, and I would definitely choose this gangster film, over any other.

I definitely relished in every film, that was included inside. It's a perfect array of films for the ultimate Bogie fan!

The Perfect Book If You Want An Adventure, Old Movie Style

Just recently, I finished reading the adventure/romance book, "Jack and the Jungle Lion", written by Stephen Jared. Though, it's a fairly new book, it has a bit of a classic adventure, on the edge of your seat type feeling, that a lot of the older books have. The book is about movie star, Jack Hunter, a suave and witty gentleman, who is set to go to the amazon for his next movie. Problems occur almost immediately, when the pilot of the plane has an apparent heart attack, and the plane then has to take, an emergency landing. Jack's not the only one, who was on the plane, also on board are the drunken co-pilot, Clancy and animal trainer, Max and her two kids, Tyler and Lindy. Jack tries to remain hero, like he does in his movies, but Max always knocks him down a peg, bringing him down to reality. It's a fun and well written book, that I really enjoyed reading. While reading, I could completely envision who the characters would be. As Jack, I could completely picture Cary Grant, as Maxine, I could picture Carole Lombard and as Clancy, I envisioned Thomas Mitchell as the drunken buddy. Overall, the book is a lot of fun to read, and it has the perfect amount of adventure in it, to make it interesting, without being cheesy. Definitely recommend to my fellow old movie lovers. Hope you all enjoy!

10 quite random things about myself and my obsession with old films

For the most part, I seem to spend about 88% of my time, either watching an old movie or talking about it. That small percentage away from old movies, I do obsess over other things... I swear! XD Anywho... here is the randomness of me, Enjoy!

1. Addicted is probably not strong enough a word to describe how much I utterly adore Marina and the Diamonds. Her music is just so brilliant and interesting, in that I've never quite heard music like hers before. There doesn't go a day, without me listening to at least one of her songs. Some of her songs, I can relate to so well, and they are just so much fun to listen to.

Recommended Songs: I would say her an entire album(The Family Jewels) but if you want to hear her absolute best, then I would suggest listening to either, "I am Not a Robot", or "Oh No!"

2. If I could be any two characters, from any movie, they would be: Nora Charles in "The Thin Man'' and Ann Lemp in "Four Daughters".

3. Favorite Leading Man of the 1940's(Not Including Jeffrey Lynn!) would definitely be Cary Grant, Robert Cummings, and William Prince.

4. Two actors, that I wish could have worked together would be Myrna Loy and Humphrey Bogart, Myrna Loy and Jeffrey Lynn, and Jeffrey Lynn and Jean Harlow

5. The 1930's are my favorite style decade, with the 1960's close behind.

6. If I could steal away any Myrna Loy look, it would be her amazingly brilliant striped dress, she wore in "The Thin Man". As a matter of fact, I would steal her entire wardrobe from that film.

7. I prefer watching Jeffrey Lynn in his more comedic roles, such as his role in "Four Daughters" or his very uptight role in "It All Came True". Even when his character is tensed up, the environment of the film is lighthearted.

8. I survive solely on these four shows: "CSI", "Infomania", "Deadly Women", and "Glee".( I confess to being an informative Deadly CSIer Gleek and I'm quite proud to admit it!)

9. I will NEVER read or watch anything to do with "Twilight". All I have to say to that is, BLEH!

10. I HATE HATE HATE Peanut Butter!

Dirk Bogarde: The Writer

I was going to do a Halloween post for Dirk, but when I was thinking it over, it wasn't really panning out, quite the way I envisioned. Dirk Bogarde was the 1960's Cary Grant. He was well-dressed, spoke exceptionally well, and charmed any viewer watching him. Dirk excelled in the style department, whether he was dressing up for a premiere or just relaxing at home, Dirk always looked impeccable. Dirk really could handle any style he wore- whether it was a simple black and white tux or plaid shirt with some jeans, Dirk looked good wearing anything.

Throughout the years, Marlo Thomas has maintained a simple and adorable style through her choices of clothing and hair styles. Today, I present pictures of the lovable actress from her early days before "That Girl", to her days during "That Girl" and after, in which she aged very gracefully. The pictures are all rather jumbled together, but you'll get the idea of how Marlo Thomas has changed through the times.

Marlo's style started off as the cute girl next door and gradually changed into a sophisticated look as she got older. 365 Movies: Love Crazy Review(THE FINAL FILM)

Love Crazy stars William Powell, Myrna Loy, Jack Carson, Gail Patrick, and Florence Bates in this 1941 film. On their fourth wedding anniversary, what starts off as a nostaglic and humorous walk back into their first anniversary, nearly ends in divorce, when Stephen(Powell) is found hanging out with another woman(Patrick). Still in love with Stephen, but unable to deal with the supposed affair, Susan(Loy) decides divorce is the only option. Stephen doesn't want to let Susan go, because he knows deep down, she still loves him, and so he decides that the only way, to keep his wife, is to act a little(okay a LOT!) crazy. Susan catches on pretty quickly, that its an act, but no one else seems too, which causes more complications for Stephen in the end. This was such a perfect movie to end, the series with. It had the perfect mixture misture of humor and romance in it, with my all-time favorite on-screen couple. Loy and Powell are so magentic and charming towards each other, its often hard to notice anyone else is on the screen. There were so many moments in this movie, that I was cracking up. Delightfully goofy and fun, and it had me in stitches, the whole time.

I had felt that, I had to end the series with a Myrna Loy movie, seeing as the first film, that I watched for the series, was Manhattan Melodrama. So what began with Loy, ended with Loy. Thanks to everyone who joined in on the fun during this series. Within, the next few days, I'll be adding the good, the bad, and the ugly movies, that I've seen throughout the series and I'll also be adding my top 5 favorites as well. This has been such a fun series and I hope that, I get to do something, like this, again soon!

365 Movies: Strange Bargain Review

Strange Bargain stars Jeffrey Lynn, Martha Scott, and Harry Morgan in this 1949 film. After loosing his job, Sam(Lynn) doesn't expect to hear from his ex-employer again, but he does. He wants Sam to make his suicide look like a murder, in order for his family to live comfortably. Sam is hesitate about doing it, but when he has no way out, he has to do it. This is a B film, but it was a very captivating and interesting film. Lynn is perfect as the nervous and anxious bookkeeper, and he does the role excellently. This is far more Lynn's film, than Scott's film. She just kind of prances around, looking pretty, and worrying about her husband. I liked Morgan as the Lieutenant; I thought he was quite good. I felt that the ending had a nice twist, that I honestly wasn't expecting.

365 Movies: Waterloo Bridge Review

Waterloo Bridge stars Mae Clarke and Douglass Montgomery in this 1931 film. Ashamed of her profession, Myra(Clarke) finds it extremely difficult to tell Roy(Montgomery) about it, because she's afraid he'll leave her. The two fall in love pretty quickly, but because of Myra's insecurities about her past, the two are unable to create a future together. This is far superior to the 1941 version starring Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor. Douglass and Mae work so well together, and they are so believable as the heart stricken couple. Before the tragedy between the two began, I really was smiling, every time, they were together. They were so beautiful and charming together. I really preferred this ending as well, because I just feel that it fit better to the story. I'm so glad, that both Douglass and Mae had a chance during their career to be in this movie, because they both do so well in it. It's heart-wrenching to watch them together, but so perfect in the end. Overall, the film is beautiful yet tragic to watch, with a stunning cast as well.

365 Movies: When Were You Born? Review

When Were You Born stars Anna May Wong, Margaret Lindsay, Charles C. Wilson, Anthoyn Averill, and Jeffrey Lynn in this 1938 film. After an astrologer predicts the death of a wealthy businessman, Mei Lei Ming(Wong) helps find out who killed him. Using astrology, Mei Lei finds out through the suspect's signs, if they are guilty or not. Considering it's a rather unknown and short film, I thought it was pretty fascinating. Using astrology as a way to solve crime is an interesting theory, and I found the film to be pretty good. Anna Mae was the star of the film and she was really wonderful. Jeffrey played the exuberant reporter trying to find more information on the murder, and I thought he was fun to watch, and charming to see in the bit part.

Together Again stars Irene Dunne, Charles Boyer, Charles Coburn, and Mona Freeman in this 1944 film. After her dead husband's statue is destroyed, Mayor Anne Crandall(Dunne) looks for another sculpture. What she finds is a very charming Frenchman named George(Boyer) and there is immediate chemistry between the two. Anne's overly whiny step-daughter Diana(Freeman) is so over the top, she really puts a downer on the film. The storyline is so-so with feeling of "Theodora goes Wild" and "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" mixed into it, and both of those films were much better, than this one. The humor in this was kind of dry, but the teaming of Dunne, Boyer, and Coburn was absolutely brilliant.

Despicable Me stars Steve Carrell, Jason Segel, and Russell Brand in this 2010 animated film. His entire life, villain Gru(Carrell) has tried to be a model villain, but things never turn out, quite the way he wants them to. His pessimistic Mother(Julie Andrews) doesn't think he's good at being a villain, and is always making Gru feel bad about himself. With his arch nemesis(Segel) on his back, Gru must go through with his evil plan, and take care of three little orphan girls. What Gru doesn't expect to happen though, is to become so deeply attached to the little girls. It's a fun film for the entire family to watch, with immature little jokes along the way, but nothing harmful. It is probably best for kids but I do think, that the kid in the adults will find some enjoyment in it.

Last Holiday stars Alec Guiness and Kay Walsh in this 1950 film. Discovering he's dying, George Bird(Guiness) decides to go a bit of a holiday, before his final days. What he doesn't expect though, is to change people's lives in the process. It's a touching and at most times, a very charming and sweet film. It is a bit of a message film, but it's not at all preachy, which I totally liked. Alec Guiness was absolutely wonderful, and I really wish this film was more well known. It was such a marvelous film, that had me on the verge of crying.

The Doctor Takes a Wife stars Loretta Young, Ray Milland, Reginald Gardiner, Gail Patrick, and Edmund Gwenn in this 1940 film. Career girl June(Young) makes a job out of being a single girl, and when a rumor spreads about her being married, she has to cover up her tracks quick. Trying to turn her scandal into an opportunity to start up a new book, June make an agreement with her fake husband, Tim(Milland), that will enable both of them a chance to move on with their careers. There is one hitch though, Tim and June have to pretend not only to family and friends, that they are devotedly happily in love, but also to the media, which can often be difficult. This is a very underrated screwball with a phenomenal cast. Ray and Loretta are deliciously fun to watch, and the chemistry is definitely hot between the two of them. I really think, they could have built up a movie with the supporting cast alone. They are wonderfully talented actors, in a splendid film.

365 Movies: The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Review

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine stars Sylvia Sidney, Fred MacMurray, and Henry Fonda in this 1936 film. A love affair occurs between a country girl(Sidney) and city boy(MacMurray) all during a feud between her family and another. Henry plays the love-struck Dave, who has been in the love with June(Sidney) for quite a while, but realizes he has to step aside, when she falls for Jack(MacMurray). This is by far the most surprisingly unexpected good film, that I've seen recently. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the cast was utter perfection. The three leads are amazing as usual, but its the supporting actors, that steal the film. From Nigel Bruce's Thurber, to the sweet Tater(Fuzzy Knight), to Beulah Bondi's kind Melissa, to Spanky's playful Buddy, and by far the best performance goes to Fred Stone as Judd. He was remarkably sweet and understandably fragile, yet strong and he played it perfectly. The only downfall to this movie is that it can be a bit slow in the beginning, but other than that, it's worth a viewing.

A Million to One stars Joan Fontaine and Bruce Bennett in this 1936 film. A young man(Bennett) trains to be a runner, but gets distracted by a pretty rich girl(Fontaine). This is by far the worst movie, I've seen in the 365 series. While Joan is lovely to watch, the film is just so awful. The storyline falls flat, almost immediately when it starts, and I lost interest very early in. I'd definitely recommend, skipping this movie. It really isn't worth the watch, even if Joan is in it.

Girls' School stars Anne Shirley, Nan Grey, and Marjorie Main in this 1938 film. At an all-girls' school, a young poor girl(Shirley) is bullied constantly and treated poorly, and things become worse, when rumors start spreading about. It's not a bad film, but the treatment that this poor girl goes through, is really difficult to watch. I honestly don't think any girl or guy for that matter should be treated so darn badly. It was one of those movies, where I was squirming because of the cruel behavior. Anne was so lovely and natural in front of the camera, and she really made the film. The ending was rather weak, but the cast was pretty good to watch.

When Ladies Meet stars Myrna Loy, Robert Montgomery, Frank Morgan, Ann Harding, and Alice Brady in this 1933 film. In love with his friend, Jimmy(Montgomery) finds it difficult when Mary(Loy) falls for her married publisher(Morgan). It has a clever and smashing cast and for the most part, the story holds me in. I thought Alice was absolutely fun and she really stole the film with her outrageous behavior. Robert had some of the wittiest and funniest lines, and the opposing personalities that he and Loy have in the film, somehow work. They work wonderfully together, and I honestly wished they appeared in more movies together.

The Feminine Touch stars Rosalind Russell, Don Ameche, Van Heflin, and Kay Francis in this 1941, W.S. Van Dyke film. Fearing her husband isn't in love with her anymore, Julie(Russell) tries to make him jealous, but not with much effort. Julie finds that she is becoming more jealous over her husband(Ameche) and Nellie(Francis) than she is, at getting him jealous. It's a fun romantic comedy, but the story-line doesn't hold much for me. I thought the pairing of Ameche and Russell was absolutely genius, and they worked splendidly together. As supporting players, I thought Francis and Heflin did exceptionally well, though they were a tad wacky.

Private Lives stars Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, Reginald Denny, and Una Merkel in this 1931 film. While separated from one another, and on honeymoon's with their new spouses, Mandy(Shearer) and Elyot(Montgomery) rekindle their romance, and decide to run off together. Their new spouses(Denny and Merkel) are heartbroken, and are determined to get them back, but they end up matching better than expected. While filled with wit and charm, the film lacked chemistry throughout. While in the beginning, Robert and Norma had the chemistry, it fizzled after a bit. The relationship between the two is so hot and cold, that somehow they click.

Our Blushing Brides stars Joan Crawford, Anita Page, Robert Montgomery, and Dorothy Sebastian in this 1930 film. Three young women vie for love from three rich men, but don't realize until after, that there dream guys aren't exactly who they claim to be. Joan Crawford's character is so odd, and she never gives Robert's character a real chance, until the very end of the film. Her character is very depressing and annoying, and I found myself sympathizing more with Robert's character. Anita was absolutely marvelous! The film though, seemed way too long and it probably could have been half an hour shorter.

The Frogmen stars Richard Widmark, Dana Andrews, and Gary Merrill in this 1951, Lloyd Bacon film.Trying to gain respect from his crew of men, Lt. Cmdr Lawrence(Widmark) comes off more cold-hearted and stand-offish, than being able to relate to his men. The leader of the men is Jake Flannigan(Andrews), who immediately doesn't like him, and when he doesn't like him, the rest of the guys don't either. It's a really interesting film, with an absolutely stellar cast. Although, I prefer to see Widmark as a gangster, I thought he was marvelous as the Lieutenant Commander. It may have been an hour and 30 minutes long, but it really felt longer than that.

Stepping Out stars Charlotte Greenwood, Leila Hyams, and Reginald Denny in this 1931 film. Unhappy that their husbands seem to be paying to work and women, Sally(Greenwood) and Eve(Hyams) decide to leave but complications arise. Tubby(Harry Stubbs) and Tom(Denny) love their wives but when a pretty lady passes by, and gives them some attention, they run for them, especially Tubby. It was so much fun to see Charlotte and Leila in such fun roles, especially Charlotte. Charlotte was witty and fun, and Leila was absolutely charming to watch. I couldn't even understand how, Reggie's character could have fallen for someone else, when his wife was Leila! Overall, it wasn't too bad of a film, with a stellar cast!

It Started with Eve stars Deanna Durbin, Robert Cummings, and Charles Laughton in this 1941 film. Fearing that his Father(Laughton) is on the verge of dying, Johnny(Cummings) goes to look for his fiancée but is unable to find her. Thinking that there isn't much time left, Johnny hires a hatcheck girl to pose as his fiancée. What Johnny and Anne(Durbin) don't expect though, is for Johnny's Father to make a full recover. Johnny's Father finds Anne absolutely charming and after he recovers, he pretends to still be ill, in order for Anne to stick around. This is such a delightfully charming film, with a perfectly sweet cast. Robert and Deanna are so much fun to watch and the chemistry between the two of them is undeniably cute. Playing Robert's Father, Charles plays it to perfection and he's so much fun to watch! This really is such a fun film, that leaves you smiling from ear to ear, when its finished.

This Side of Heaven stars Lionel Barrymore, Fay Bainter, Mae Clarke, and Tom Brown in this 1934 film. Feeling frustrated and depressed with his life, Martin Turner(Barrymore) considers killing himself. With his family slipping away and business not going as planned, Martin feels more unhappy than ever, and he feels that he's bringing his family down. This was a surprisingly good melodrama with an utterly amazing cast. Lionel and Fay as the Mother and Father fit so perfectly, and it just looked so natural and real. I loved the three actors, who played their children. The more, I've seen of Mae and Tom, the more I genuinely like their performances. I also was delighted to find out that Una Merkel and Eddie Nugent were also in this film, they were splendid!

The Bride Walks Out stars Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Raymond, and Robert Young in this 1936 film. After deciding to marry, Carolyn(Stanwyck) and Michael(Raymond) start off on a bumpy road. Before they marry, Carolyn quits her job because Michael wants to bring in the bucks. Both of them disagree on money issues, and most of the time, Carolyn keeps the money issues quiet from Michael. When Carolyn and Michael get into bit of a scuffle, they meet a drunken playboy, who instantly falls for Carolyn's charms. With such a perfect cast, what could possibly go wrong? Oh yeah, it was a tad sexist! There was so many little comments that were so sexist and wrong, that I couldn't believe they would allow such lines in a movie. The storyline was fairly weak but I did think Robert was absolutely charming as the drunk.

Too Many Wives stars Anne Shirley, John Morley, and Gene Lockhart in this 1937 film. While out walking dogs, soon-to-be unemployed Barry(Morley) meets the wealthy and pretty Betty(Shirley) and the two instantly like each other. Through mistakes, Barry and Betty like and dislike each other, so much, its hard to keep track. Betty's "friend" Clabby(Frank Melton) is annoyed by the budding romance between Betty and Barry, and he tries to split the two apart often. This is such a weak and poor film, it really saddens me that such talented people were in such a waste-less film. Anne is bubbly as usual, but the sweet personality couldn't save this film. I will say though, John Morley was pretty good and I wish I could see more of him, but sadly he died in 1949. He had only made 5 films, with four of them being uncredited.

Sabrina stars Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden in this 1954, Billy Wilder film. The chauffeur's daughter falls madly for the employer's son. Trying to end her fling with David, Sabrina's Father(John Williams) sends his daughter off to Paris, where she'll be there for the next two years, to live how to cook. After her two years away, Sabrina(Hepburn) changes not only physically but mentally as well. When she sees David(Holden) again, she thinks her heart falls again for him, but she soon realizes she has moved on - this time with his older brother, Linus(Bogart)! This is such a marvelous and romantic film, that I never really appreciated until, I re-watched it a couple of times. It can be a little odd to see Hepburn and Bogart as a couple, considering the huge age difference, but somehow they work.

Doorway to Suspicion stars Jeffrey Lynn, Linda Caroll, and Fred Baker in this 1954 film. An American bandleader falls hard for the cold Greta(Carollo). While he acts like a giggling child over his newfound crush over Greta, she remains frozen and cold towards him throughout the film. The American bandleader, Paul Stapleton(Lynn) refuses to listen to his friends, when they advise him, that his relationship with Greta is bad. There never seems like any relationship happens between Lynn and Caroll. Caroll remains stern, cold, and uptight throughout the film, and it makes it very unbelievable that Lynn would be at all attracted to her. His personality instantly lights up, when he smiles, and he makes the film worth watching. Caroll, on the other hand is very boring and her performance in this, is a snooze fest. The film, overall seems so far-fetched and unbelievably bad, that its hard to sit through it. Besides the terrible acting from Caroll, I actually thought that the rest of the cast was pretty good.

The Prestige stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johannsson in this 2006 film. Two rival magicians(Jackman and Bale) become even more bitter, after Robert's(Jackman) wife is accidentally killed during a trick. Deciding revenge is his best medicine, Robert goes directly after Alfred(Bale). It's a good suspense film, that is altogether a little too long for me. The cast is thrilling to watch and it was interesting to watch Bale and Jackman be such enemies toward one another. The reason this is being written now is because, I was in the ER the entire night. We ended up having a tv in the room, so we watched The Prestige. I was in the ER, from about 10:30 to nearly 4:30 in the morning. The doctors have advised me to take an easy and to rest, so I can make a full recovery.

The Great Race stars Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, Peter Falk, and Keena Wynn in this 1965, Blake Edwards' film. The Great Race starts in New York and ends in Paris, and a slew of crazy characters are determined to win the race. The overly confident one, The Great Leslie(Curtis) believes it is his right to come in first place, while newspaper reporter, Maggie(Wood) is more interested in talking about women's rights than anything else. We also have the dastardly evil, Professor Fate(Lemmon) and his sidekick, Max(Falk) who are determined to beat Leslie. This film is sooooo long! It really didn't need to be so long, and they could have easily cut the film in half. I found Tony to be especially annoying in this, mainly because it seemed like he was reading off cue-cards. While adorable and sweet, Natalie's character didn't really hold much of an interest for me. If Jack wasn't in this film, it would honestly be a horrific film, but he was just so awesome! He was so funny and charismatic, and I loved his "evil laugh". He was the only good part about this movie. The story-line felt very weak to me, and there weren't many laughs in this nearly 3 hour film.

365 Movies: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Review

Snow White stars Adriana Caselotti, Lucille La Verne, and Roy Atwell in this 1937, Walt Disney film. Jealous of her stepdaughter, the Queen(La Verne) tries to have her killed but is unsuccessful. Feeling she is the only one capable of killing Snow White(Caselotti), the Queen goes after her, herself. Finding out that her Stepmother wants her dead, Snow White runs away to a little cottage. Trying to hide away, Snow White decides to clean up the little cottage for the owners, only to discover they are the seven dwarfs. At first, they are all hesitant about her staying, but soon, they all grow to love her, even Grumpy! No matter, how old I am, Disney movies, will always hold a special place in my heart. This is such a beloved and special film, and its still magical to me, after all this time. As a kid, my character had to be Dopey. I could definitely relate to Dopey;m we both were very quiet and both very clumsy! Lol

The Wizard stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley in this 1939, Victor Fleming film. After feeling unnoticed, Dorothy(Garland) decides to run away from home, but only to realize that her family and friends, do truly care for her. When a tornado hits, and separates Dorothy from her family, she awakens to find, she is in the land of oz. It's a whimsical and magical film, that brings back memories of being a kid. The only thing is, when I was a kid, I had watched this movie so many times, I really began to get annoyed with it. My Love Came Back stars Olivia De Havilland, Jeffrey Lynn, Eddie Albert, Jane Wyman, Charles Winninger, and Spring Byington in this 1940 film. Believing that his employer(Winninger) is having an affair with a young musician, Tony Baldwin(Lynn) tries to keep the "supposed affair" quiet. What he doesn't expect though, is to fall for the young violinist. The young violinist, Amelia(De Havilland) finds the rumors of having an affair with Tony's boss, absolutely stupid, and she tries to dispel them, but more rumors pop out. Its a pretty mellow film but the leads have great chemistry. The supporting players in this film, are absolutely fun to watch. I really loved watching Eddie and Jane as a couple. They were really quite marvelous. Jeffrey was pretty darn awesome, and I honestly haven't seen a movie of his, in a bit, so I thought it was only necessary to treat my need of seeing him in another movie. :)

Penelope stars Natalie Wood, Ian Bannen, Dick Shawn, and Peter Falk in this 1966 film. Penelope(Wood) is a beautiful young wife, who has a small problem- she just robbed her husband's(Bannen) bank. Trying to sort out her problems, Penelope goes to her love stricken analyst(Shawn), but he's of no use. It's a bubbly and funny romantic comedy, and I enjoyed it, just as much, the second time around. Natalie is so darling in this, and she has chemistry with every guy, she's in a scene with. She's marvelous! Though the story is quiet far-fetched, its just an all-around goofy film. You could say, it's one of my guilty pleasure films!

The Cocoanuts stars The Max Brothers, Margaret Dumont, and Oscar Shaw in this 1929 film. In their first film, the Marx Brothers' star in this zany tail of a bankrupted hotel. The owner, Hammer(Groucho) wants to bring in some more dough, so he flirts with a very rich woman(played by Dumont) in hopes of gaining of getting money and exposure out of her. Two con artists(Harp and Chico) have different plans for Hammer, and most of the time, they screw everything up. It's a very funny film, and had me laughing at many moments, but it didn't have the same charm, that the other films had. I think, the reason it lacked a little for me, was because it was there first film. Some of there humor in this, is funny, but not nearly good as there later stuff. I was quite disappointed to find out that Zeppo had such a meaningless role. Even though he's very adorable, he really didn't being much to the film. Chico and Harpo were the laughs for me, in this film. So utterly hysterical!

Breakfast at Tiffany's stars Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, and Buddy Ebsen in this 1961, Blake Edwards' film. The film is about society girl, Holly Golightly(Hepburn) dreams to marry a wealthy man, no matter what he acts like or looks like, but when she falls for a down on his luck writer, things change for both her and her new fella. Her new fella, Paul(Peppard) accepts Holly for Holly, while the other men flee, when they see more of a person behind the beautiful dresses and makeup. Holly, is more real than makes herself out to be, and that's what Paul loves her for. The two go through bit of a roughness with one another, but in the end, they know that they belong to each other. This is by far, Audrey's best film. She is so enchanting and charming, and she embodies the character of Holly Golightly. George is simply marvelous as the caring Paul. The only performance, that I try my hardest to forget is Mickey Rooney's. He is just so awful! Even with him in it, the film is spectacular and the outfits, that Audrey wears are absolutely divine. I would definitely steal everything she wears, in this film!

365 Movies: Cyrano de Bergerac Review

Cyrano de Bergerac stars Jose Ferrer, Mala Powers, and William Prince in this 1950 film. The well spoken but long-nosed Cyrano de Bergerac(Ferrer) loves the fair and beautiful Roxane(Powers) but fears she doesn't love him back, because of his rather "unusual'' features. In love with another man, Roxane wants Cyrano to be kind to this man, and make him feel welcomed. Using him to his advantage, Cyrano helps Christian(Prince) by speaking for him, while Christian appears to know, what he's saying. Cyrano later finds out, that Roxane didn't love Christian because of his looks, but because she thought it was he, who was speaking those eloquent words to her. It's a lovely film, but overall it drags. There were so many parts, that I wish that they had taken out, because it just made the film feel so much longer. I loved the sort of friendship between Cyrano and Christian. Though they both vie for the same woman, in the end, they both want her to be happy, and that is really what matters most. I loved the part, when Christian thinks he doesn't need Cyrano anymore, and decides he's going to Roxane on his own, and completely goes wrong for him, until Cyrano comes back and helps him. I thought Jose's performance as Cyrano was superb, and he definitely deserved to win the Oscar for best actor. William was marvelous as usual, but I didn't really think much of Mala.

Lust for Gold stars Glenn Ford, William Prince, Ida Lupino, and Gig Young in this 1949 film. Intrigued by the stories of his Grandfather's goldmine, Barry(Prince) investigates and tries to find the hidden mine. Through his point of view, you understand the legend behind the gold-mine and how everyone crazes to get their hands on the gold. Through flashblacks, the audience gets to see how Barry's Grandfather(Ford) found the gold, and what became of it. It actually was quite interesting and it did hold my interest throughout the film. The only part, I didn't like was Gig. I've said it, several times before, but I've always thought Gig was very wooden with his acting, and in this, he's playing the same exact wooden role, he's known for. He didn't do much for me, but I did like Glenn and Ida; I thought they were marvelous. But to be honest, the best part of the movie for me, was that William had a fairly big role. Even though, he's listed fourth in the credits, he probably has the most screen time, which I loved. I did think it was funny that, Glenn is supposed to be Dutch, but his actual American accent keeps on popping out. Overall, not a bad film!

The Great Mr. Nobody stars Eddie Albert, Joan Leslie, and Alan Hale in this 1941 film. Good hearted but rather dumb, Robert Smith(Albert) is constantly letting others walk over him, without even realizing. Truly not meaning not to hurt anyone, Robert doesn't realize that half of the time, he's hurting his chances for happiness. His girl, Mary(Leslie) supports him, but hates to see him, being pushed around, and most of the time, she gets upset with how he deals with things. It had a good idea for a film, but really didn't hold much of an interest for me. Even with the 19 year age difference, between Eddie and Joan, I did honestly think, they were a good coupling. It's a so-so film, with a mediocre story-line, which leaves it, not very memorable.

The More the Merrier stars Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, and Charles Coburn, in this 1943 George Stevens film. Because of housing shortage in Washington D.C., career girl Connie(Arthur) feels its her patriotic duty, to have half of her apartment up for rent. What she expects to get is a woman to share the apartment with, but instead its an older gentleman, that goes by the name of Benjamin Dingle(Coburn). Mr. Dingle is a rather daffy character, but he means well, and the two try to stay out of one another's way, which doesn't really work to well. While Connie's off at work, Mr. Dingle decides to rent, half of his room to a young fellow named Joe Carter(McCrea), who is just looking for a place to stay for the weekend, but he gets more out of it, than he expects. It is just about the loveliest, funniest, most adorable movie, I've seen. This is definitely in my top favorite movies, and for good reason. The direction of the film is utterly wonderful, and the acting and story-line mesh so well together, it's magic! Jean and Joel are beautifully fun to watch, and Charles in the mix of it all, makes this one of the best movies ever! Such an enjoyably fun and romantic film!

Honeymoon stars Shirley Temple, Franchot Tone, and Guy Madison in this 1947, William Keighley film. Nearly 18 years old, Barbara(Temple) heads to Mexico, to meet up with her beau(Madison) in preparation of getting married. The only problem is, the two hardly know one another, but for some odd reason, they want to get hitched anyway. Trying to find her beau and slightly lost, Barbara meets David(Tone), an older and quite an uptight American, who tries to reunite the young lovebirds, but isn't having the best luck in the world. It lacked so much in this film. The script is terrible and the scenes between Tone and Temple are more than slightly disturbing. I have so many things to say, that I didn't like about this film, but I don't want to make this post any longer, than it needs to be. Even at the "old" age of 42, I still found Franchot to be very handsome and witty, but he just should not have been put in this movie. Shirley, while cute, lacks any ability to draw me in. She was so miscast in this! Guy just looked so awful, playing the fiancee, and it saddened me, to see him play such a stupid character. Definitely, I would recommend skipping this!

The Virgin Queen stars Bette Davis, Richard Todd, and Joan Collins in this 1955 film. Walter Raleigh(Todd) is determined to propose an idea to Queen Elizabeth(Davis) of going on an expedition to the new world. Their relationship starts off rocky, but the Queen soon falls for the dashing Raleigh. Raleigh though doesn't have the same feelings, and he is in a secretive marriage with a young ward- Beth(Collins) and the two try to keep everything hush hush in hopes of neither of them, getting in any danger. I thought this film was solely going to be a historical drama, but I found there to be quite a lot of humor and romance in it. Richard and Joan are so so so lovely to watch together. They have the rapport and they look so perfect together. Even though, the "star" of this movie is Bette, I felt that entire movie, was centered around Richard and Joan. Overall, not a bad film, considering I usually steer away from this genre.

When Vera(Knightley) reunites with her ex-love(Rhys), she doesn't expect for him to be married. Her ex Dylan(Rhys) is a drunk self crazed poet, who cares more for himself, than for his wife and child. He rarely treats his wife with any respect, and spends more time oogling at Vera. His wife Caitlin(Miller) finds friendship in Vera, and the two find that they have more in common, than just Dylan. It's a film that didn't hold my interest at all. Half of the time, I was either trying really to keep my attention on the movie, or I was just plain out spacing out. The film is fairly short, but it honestly felt like the movie wouldn't end. I was really starting to wonder, if there was ever going to be an ending to this film. Overall, very boring and blah and I advise my readers, to skip this movie.

Love with the Proper Stranger stars Natalie Wood, Steve McQueen, Edie Adams, and Tom Bosley in this 1963 film. Discovering she's pregnant from a one night stand, Angie(Wood) decides to tell the man, she was with, about the news. Rocky(McQueen) is less than excited about hearing he's going to be a Father, but decides to help her in some way. It's such a simple love story, but when you watch it's utter magic. It has such moments of tenderness and sweetness, and McQueen and Wood are beautiful together. For me, I can watch this film over and over again. I can even quote it! That's how much I love this movie. The sweetness and wonderful chemistry between Natalie and Steve is what makes this film so amazing.

Toy Story 3 stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Ned Beatty, and Michael Keaton in this 2010 film. The toys are back in the third and final Toy Story film. With their owner Andy(John Morris) heading off to college, the toys are in fear of being thrown out. By mistake though, Andy's Mother(Laurie Metcalf) throws them out, not realizing they are in the trash bag. Barely escaping, the toys end up at a day care, where everything is not what it seems. The toys meet Lotso(Beatty) who seems like a cuddly sweet bear, but he's just the opposite. They also meet Ken(Keaton) a flamboyant and fashionable doll, who instantly falls for Barbie(Jodi Benson). It's adventurous and fun from the very start of the film. As a person, who has basically grown up with the franchise, this is by far, the best one. It's humorous and has so many fantastic moments. Usually, I don't like when a franchise brings in new characters, but I adored the newbies in this. My favorite definitely had to be Ken. He was so funny, and Keaton had absolutely perfect timing! Definitely a fun and enjoyable film!!

Up stars Ed Asner, Jordan Nagai, and Christopher Plummer in this 2009 film. After the death of his beloved wife, Carl(Asner) decides to fulfill his wife's wish. With people having the desire to take his property away, Carl decides to leave, but he's not going alone - he's bringing his house. Pixar and Disney are the geniuses behind this delightful and sweet film, that I greatly love now. Within the first fifteen minutes, I was already pulled in, and was nearly on the verge of crying. It is such a heartwarming film, that will definitely go down in cinema history, as one of the best. It's a funny and goofy, with moments of tenderness, that leave you going aww throughout.

This is an action packed film, with a fascinating story to boot. I really liked it, but honestly I didn't feel that it should have been so long. They could have easily cut some of the film out. I was really saddened to see how little William's role is, even though his name is high on the credits. With a small and doing a very outstanding job, was my new favorite Mark Stevens, who plays Lt Barker. Overall, I did like it but definitely could've been shorter.

Mother Carey's Chickens stars Anne Shirley, Ruby Keeler, James Ellison, Fay Bainter, Walter Brennan, and Frank Albertson in this 1938 film. After their Father(Frank Morgan) passes away, the Carey Family is left on their own, to fed for themselves. Their Mother(Bainter) tries her hardest to supply for the family, but it is often times, too difficult for her to do on her own. The two daughters of the family try to help but not with much luck. With some lucky swindling, the Carey family is able to start up a boarding house, but unfortunately trouble starts up pretty soon after. A very wealthy and snobbish family wants to buy up the house, but the Carey try everything in their power to stop it from happening. This was actually a pretty swell movie. It's a rather simple and straight to the point movie, but it's sweet to watch. Like I've said before, Anne has become a new favorite of mine, and in this she does splendidly. I absolutely adored Donnie Dunagan, the youngest boy of the family. Not only cute, but he was so charming! It's a good little unknown film, with a fun little story to boot.

For Me and My Gal stars Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and George Murphy in this 1942, Busby Berkeley film. When Jo Hayden(Garland) first meets Harry Palmer(Kelly), she has an instant dislike for him. Harry, is quite opposite of Jo. He cares more about himself and his career, than anything else, and that infuriates Jo to no end. When Jo's partner, Jimmy(Murphy) watches Jo and Harry singing and dancing together, he decides that there act is done. When Harry and Jo team up, they are complete magic and mesh so well together. With their very opposite personalities, Harry and Jo fall for one another pretty quickly, with the latter falling harder. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite musicals that I've ever seen. It's not only charming and sweet, but Gene and Judy are about the cutest. They mesh so well together, and every bit that they have together, they electrify the scene. With the three movies, that they made together, this is by far my favorite. This isn't just another musical; this musical to me has a lot more character and depth to it, which makes it so charming. I could definitely watch this movie over and over again. It's a feel good film from the minute you start it up!

Arrowsmith stars Ronald Colman and Helen Hayes in this 1931, John Ford film. Doctor Martin Arrowsmith(Colman) puts aside his own health and life, to cure other's. His supportive wife, Leora(Hayes) stands by his side, throughout the whole process, even though at times, she's unhappy with him. I'll give it, that it is a good movie but it's too slow for me. Everything that happens, really drags and it made me wish I could have fast forward through half of it. Ronald(and his spectacular voice!) and Helen are wonderfully sweet together in this and even when Myrna Loy crosses between, they still remain strong. Even with a small role, Myrna Loy is smashing!

The Dark Corner stars Mark Stevens, Lucille Ball, William Bendix, and Clifton Webb in this 1946, Henry Hathaway film. After her boss, a private investigator, is framed for a murder, Kathleen(Ball) tries to clear his name. Brad's(Stevens) ex-partner is keeping a very close on him and it makes Brad very uneasy, and he tries to keep Kathleen out, but she wants to help him. His ex-partner Anthony(Kurt Kreuger) is very shady and tries his hardest to return a little favor to Brad. When Anthony turns up dead, the only suspect is Brad, and the only person, who believes he's innocent is Kathleen. Clifton Webb plays a very uptight and precise art collector, who is involved in the whole mess, and he plays it brilliantly. Aside from him, I loved the performances of Lucille, Mark, and William. I really think that the more I see of Mark, the more I look forward to seeing him. I definitely think he's overlooked today, and his performance in this, is marvelous. He plays the stone cold private investigator brilliantly. I'm used to seeing Lucille as a comedienne, but in this she's very serious, and she does it wonderfully. Not only amazing in comedy, but also with serious material, Lucy could do it. The film really had me pulled me in throughout and kept me guessing, as to what was going to happen next. Just like Mark, I think this film is quite overlooked as well.

Post Grad stars Alexis Bledel, Zach Gilford, Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch, and Carol Burnett in this 2009 film. After graduating from college, Ryden(Bledel) thinks she'll instantly get her dream job afterwards, but things go completely different. When she doesn't land the dream job, Ryden applies everywhere, and then decides to move back into her parents' house. Her family is very very eccentric and they try to help her through her crisis, but not much help is done. This was an average film, with a superb cast. I adore and respect the talents of Alexis, Michael, Jane, and Carol but this film was straight-off terrible for them. The storyline faltered and seemed so mixed up, that it didn't seem to pull you in much. I will say though that, Zach and Alexis did have amazing chemistry together. I do think that there was a scene in this film, that was definitely not needed. It wasn't funny and it was just all around sad to watch.

The Enchanted Cottage stars Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, Herbert Marshall, and Mildred Natwick in this 1945 film. Engaged to be married, Oliver Bradford(Young) and his fiancee Beatrice(Hillary Brooke) plan to stay at an adorable little cottage on their honeymoon. Before they even marry, Oliver is set and ready to fight in the war, leaving Beatrice alone. At the cottage, is a homely looking maid named Laura(McGuire) who falls for Oliver, the minute she sees him. When Oliver does return back, he doesn't go to his fiancee, but to the little cottage, he found such comfort in. With time, Oliver finds peace and happiness with himself, and he soon grows to love Laura. This is such a dreamy and spectacular romance film, and it leaves you in awe from the very start of the film. As much as I don't want to use this word, the film was very enchanting and sweet. The first time, I saw this movie, I was in tears. This film has a special place in my heart and it's such a wonderfully romantic film.

The Big Parade stars John Gilbert, Renee Adoree, and Karl Dane in this 1925, King Vidor film. Spoiled rich kid, James(Gilbert) enlists in the army, after his sweetheart dreams of seeing him in a uniform. While away in France, James immediately connects with Bull(Tom O' Brien) and Slim(Dane) and they all build up a friendship, that could never be torn apart. With his sweetheart away, James meets a French girl named Melisande(Adoree), who speaks very little English, but the two are smitten almost right away. It's a powerful and dramatic war film, but altogether, it was excellent. There wasn't one bad performance in this film, and I loved seeing the humorous moments between the guys. I haven't seen many silent dramas, but I still found this, to be very good.

Laura stars Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, and Judith Anderson in this 1944, Otto Preminger film. Detective Mark McPherson(Andrews) investigates the murder of Laura Hunt(Tierney) and tries to unravel the mysteries behind her death. The suspected and witty friend of Laura, Waldo Lydecker(Webb) tries his hardest to pin other people as the suspect, but each time, he makes it more obvious. This is a superb, smart, and very thrilling film noir. It leaves you curious, what will happen from start to finish. So many questions came through my mind, when I first saw this, and even though I saw it again, it still left me wanting more. It's a brilliant film, with an utterly amazing cast to boot. Gene and Dana are so lovely to watch, and I really wish they were in even more films together, because they were wonderful. As the squeamish and often times, he comes off as a Momma's Boy, Vincent was deliciously fun to watch!

It's Complicated stars Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, and John Krasinski in this 2009 film. 10 years after their divorce, Jane(Streep) and Jake(Baldwin) rekindle their romance again, but only this time, he's married to someone else. Feeling guilty about her affair with her ex-husband, Jane goes back and forth, on whether to continue with the affair or not. Jake, on the other is enjoying every moment of their rekindled affair, and he won't stop at anything, to have it continue. There three grown children know nothing about it, but they are still reeling over the divorce, that affected them, when they were kids. Jane's architect and newfound friend, Adam(Martin) immediately connects with Jane, but with Jake still in her life, he is often pushed to the side. It's super funny and had me laughing so much. I watched it with my Mom, who loved it as well. I thought that Alec was about the funniest thing in this movie. He was so hysterical and witty! Meryl was absolutely brilliant and fun too! Even though, I prefer seeing John with a leading role, I thought he was a gem in this movie as well. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this newer film!

Leap Years stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in this 2010 romantic comedy. After having high hopes, that her boyfriend of four years would propose, Anna(Adams) decides to propose to him instead. Off on a business trip, Anna tries to track her boyfriend, Jeremy(Adam Scott) down in Ireland. So many mishaps occur during her flight, that she dropped off not in Dublin, where Jeremy's at, but at a small town. Immediately Anna has a distaste for it, and for the bartender, she asks help for. Declan(Goode), the bartender finds Anna to be prudish and cold, and the two don't get together, even though Declan helps her to get to Dublin. It's a sweet film, but I honestly wished that they slowed it down with the relationship between Declan and Anna. They do seem like they genuinely like each other, but I feel that the two characters delved into marriage far too quickly. They did have a cute rift towards each other and the chemistry was undeniably but that was the only problem I had with them. My other problem was with Jeremy, it just didn't seem very believable that he and Anna were "in love". There wasn't anything there. Overall, fun and sweet.

Woman's World stars June Allyson, Clifton Webb, Van Heflin, Lauren Bacall, Fred MacMurray, Arlene Dahl, Cornel Wilde, and Elliott Reid. Three men are sent to New York with their wives for a possible promotion. Their boss, Mr. Gifford(Webb) selects Jerry(Heflin), Bill(Wilde), and Sid(MacMurray) as the possibilities for the job. He also keeps an eye out for their wives, Katie(Allyson), Elizabeth(Bacall), and Carol(Dahl). He watches both husband and wife to see how they react and whether or not, he thinks they are suitable for the job. It seemed to drag and it didn't have much of a storyline going on. The characters all seemed quite drab and none seemed interesting to watch, the entire way through. Elliott had a rather small role as Mr. Gifford's nephew but even he was blah in this movie. It was so very boring and I don't think, I'll be watching it any time soon.

Vicki stars Jeanne Crain, Elliot Reid, and Jean Peters in this 1953 film. Glamour girl Vicki Lynn(Peters) is found murdered in her apartment and immediate suspense is soon followed. Vicki's sister, Jill(Crain) and her publicist Steve(Reid) are the first and only suspects, that the cops keep an eye out for. Lt Ed Cornell(Richard Boone) believes that Steve killed Vicki, and that Jill was his assistant in the murder. Lieutenant Cornell starts to become so obsessed with landing Steve behind bars, he ends up watching his every move. I was really surprised by how much I loved this movie. It was superb thriller and the cast was amazingly well. Elliot and Jeanne were beautifully charming together and I think they were gorgeous to look at. The story-line was so fascinating and it held my interest, the entire time. Another thing, I would like to point out, is that Vicki is originally from Harrisburg, Pa, which is where I live, so I thought that was so neat! Overall, a very good suspense film, that you keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

City Lights stars Charles Chaplin and Virginia Cherrill in this 1931, Chaplin film. The Tramp(Chaplin) instantly falls for a poor blind girl(Cherrill) and tries everything in his power to make her life better. The blind girl unknowingly thinks that the Tramp is in fact a rich man, and she finally feels things are going to work out for her, but the Tramp is nothing but poor himself. In this very sweet and simple Chaplin silent film, I found myself crying and smiling throughout the entire film. Chaplin is such a genius and this in my opinion, is one of his best! Virginia is so lovely to look at, but the whole film belongs to Chaplin. An excellent and funny silent film, that I adored watching!

Broadway Bill stars Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Clarence Muse, Helen Vinson, and Walter Connolly in this 1934, Frank Capra film. The film is about Dan(Baxter) a man who despises his job at his Father-in-law's(Connolly) company but loves his hobby(racing horses) more than anything. When he feels like he's being trapped, Dan escapes to something that he enjoys. His wife, Margaret(Vinson) doesn't approve of his behavior and believes he'll leave his hobby alone. The only problem is, Dan loves what he does and he wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. Someone who does understand him is, Margaret's unmarried sister, Alice(Loy) who supports him throughout the entire ordeal. This is a sweet and remarkably touching film. I loved the playfulness between Loy and Baxter. They exuded cuteness together! I ended up tearing up at the end of the film, it was so sad but such a marvelous film!

The Strawberry Blonde stars James Cagney, Olivia De Havilland, Jack Carson, Rita Hayworth, George Tobias, and Alan Hale in this 1941. Raoul Walsh film. His entire life, Biff(Cagney) has been suckered punched into doing things, he doesn't necessarily want to do, because of his bully of a friend, Hugo(Carson). While waiting for Hugo to come to his office, Biff reminisces about his past and the poor decisions, that followed when he was friends with Hugo. Biff's wife, Amy(De Havilland) is a patient and kind woman, and the two match perfectly together. While he's a tad hot-headed, she's cool and patient. They seem like the ideal couple, compared to Hugo and his wife, Virginia(Hayworth), who seem to argue more than make up. It had some laughs and the cast was amazing, but overall it was a so-so film. My favorite character in this, was Old Man Grimes(Hale), Biff's Father. He was hysterical!

Wing and a Prayer stars Don Ameche, Dana Andrews, William Eythe, and Charles Bickford in this 1944 film. The film is the story of the Carrier X, during World War II. Abroad a lot of the men, just want to get down and fight, but they have strict orders, to not. Hotshot actor, Hallam Scott(Eythe) doesn't follow the rules, and most of the time, ticks off his superiors. Lt Commander Edward Moulton(Andrews) tries to help and direct the boys but he too has to be careful. Flight Commander Bingo Harper(Ameche) is a touch cookie, and if anyone is out of line, he takes immediate notice. It had the potential to be a fantastic film, but it fell pretty soon into starting up. Many times, studios brought new actors and tried to make them into stars. Some of these actors, weren't all that great at acting; though they had the looks, the talent wasn't there. A fine example was from William Eythe. The film is basically centered around his character, but he just doesn't deliver. The rest of the cast did excellently, but it was he, who made the film lack. Besides William, I felt that the storyline was really flat and it didn't have much material to hold onto. I loved seeing Don play such a strict and non-emotional character. It was so completely different from his usual roles.

A Little Princess stars Liesel Matthews, Eleanor Bron, and Liam Cunnigham in this 1995, Alfonso Cuaron film. When her Father is sent to fight for his country, little and imaginative, Sara(Matthews) is sent to a strict boarding school. At first, everything seems be going alright, until news breaks that her Father was killed in action. The headmistress, Miss Minchin(Bron) despises Sara, and tries everything in her power, to break the little girl down but she never wins. Sara finds solitude and comfort in servant girl, Becky(Vanessa Lee Chester) and the two bond instantly. When I was a little girl, and I was upset, there was always two movies, that I could find my comfort in. One of them was this, and the other being "Matilda". From these films, I found myself relating quite a lot to the main characters, and found that I wasn't so alone. After all these years, this film still holds a special place in my heart. It's so imaginative and wonderful, and it makes me smile still. Liesel is so sweet and innocent, and she just embodies the character of Sara. Eleanor is absolutely witchy and I remember growing up, thinking of how much I hated her! Such a wonderful and exciting film, that I still enjoy watching!

(500) Days of Summer stars Joseph Gordon - Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, and Matthew Gray Gubler in this 2009 film. The film is about Tom(Gordon- Levitt) and Summer's(Deschanel) tumultuous relationship. While Tom falls quickly in love with Summer, Summer doesn't want to get involved. Their personalities are very different from one another but somehow they work. Tom's buddies support him, but they often don't think that he and Summer don't work out. Sometimes, she comes off very non-emotional, while Tom is filled with love. It's a smart and simple modern film, that I greatly liked.

The Proposal stars Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, and Betty White, in this 2009 film. Fearing she is going to be deported back to Canada, editor Margaret Tate(Bullock) devises a plan, where she doesn't have to go back. Margaret comes up with a bogus story, that she is engaged to her secretary, Andrew(Reynolds), whom fears her. Sabotaging and blackmailing him into going along with her plan, neither Andrew nor Margaret have any idea, what is in store for them. Considering it is a newer film, I was pleasantly surprised, to find that there wasn't much profanity in it. Personally, I don't think profanity is required to be put in films, but it seems that a lot of newer films, tend to that. This was not only funny, but also sweet and charming. Sandra and Ryan mesh so well together, and the chemistry between them is undeniably cute. Betty White is so utterly hilarious as Andrew's Grandmother, and she has some of the best lines in the movie!

Destined to become a Doctor, Simon Sparrow goes through medical school, to accomplish his goal. Simon meets a group of guys, that he immediately connects with. Also he connects with Joy(Pavlow) a nurse, but they connect in a romantic manner. It's a charming and fun British film. Dirk is so handsome in this, and he charms the screen. I've never seen Muriel before, but she was very pretty and quite good. I loved the boys in this movie, they were so funny!

The Princess and the Frog stars Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, and Keith David in this 2009, Disney film. All her life, Tiana(Rose) has dreamt of owning her own restaurant, but she has never gotten around to making her dream a reality. When she is told that someone has bought the place, she was planning on getting, her life is thrown for a loop. While outside, she notices a frog, who is speaking. Thinking, it'll be like the fairy tale, unfortunately, Tiana kisses the frog. What she thought was he would turn human, but the opposite has happened- she's now a frog! This fits right into the Disney Classics from years' past. It's charming, sweet, and funny. It's perfect for the entire family, and not just a girly movie. Even though, I'm nearly 21, I love watching the classic Disney movies. It makes you feel like a kid all over again.

Buck Privates stars Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Lee Bowman, and Alan Curtis in this 1941 comedy. Trying to escape from a cop, Slicker(Abbott) and Herbie(Costello) accidentally enlist in the army instead. Through the army, they meet a slew of crazy characters, such as playboy Randolph(Bowman) and tough guy, Bob(Curtis). Also there is the cop(Nat Pendleton), they were trying to avoid, but aren't having much luck with that. It's super fun and many moments of hilarity. Lou Costello was so so so so so funny! His style of comedy is very much like Curly from The Three Stooges, but with his own little twist to it. Speaking of The Three Stooges, for a very brief moment, Shemp appears as a Chef, which I totally loved seeing. I really am so excited to see more Abbott and Costello, they are a riot of fun! I might also like to add, that I totally adored seeing Lee and Alan as rivals in the film. They were fantastic!

The Shining Hour stars Joan Crawford, Robert Young, Melvyn Douglas, Margaret Sullavan, and Fay Bainter, in this 1938 Frank Borzage film. After marrying Henry(Douglas), Olivia(Crawford) is faced with jealously and resent from his family. His younger brother, David(Young) becomes quite infatuated with Olivia, while their older sister, Hannah(Bainter) thinks that Olivia is only there to hurt the family. Judy(Sullavan) who has been somewhat of a sister to David and Henry finds Olivia charming, but when they both have feelings for the same guy, complications arise. I didn't think that this was that bad of a film. There could be more of a storyline but overall, it wasn't too bad. Being a huge fan of Young and Douglas, it was nice to see them in another movie together. They really are so much fun to watch! The ending can be a bit exaggerated but I still liked the movie.

Sunday in New York stars Cliff Robertson, Jane Fonda, and Rod Taylor in this 1963 comedy. Waiting for his girl to show up, Adam(Robertson) is shocked and surprised to see his younger sister, Eileen(Fonda) come in. Eileen fed up with how her relationship is going with her beau, decides to visit her older brother, for some support. When Adam's girl finds out about his sister visiting, the two decide to go somewhere else, and leave his sister at the apartment. Eileen, not wanting to be stuck in all day, decides to explore New York, where she accidentally meets Mike(Taylor). I had seen this movie, a few years back but I really didn't appreciate it back then. This time around though, it was marvelously funny! Cliff and Rod are so hysterical, especially when Adam first meets Mike. Jane was another fine act in this film, but I really think the film belonged to the boys. Delightful fun!

Just this Once stars Janet Leigh, Peter Lawford, and Lewis Stone in this 1952 film. Lucy Duncan(Leigh) is a very career oriented girl, and when she is hired to keep a money happy man in place, she is on for a wild ride. Her client, Mark Maclene(Lawford) is a ladies man, who doesn't care about much in the world, except for girls and spending his money. Annoyed with his behavior, Lucy sets it upon herself to stop him from spending so much, but not at all, realizing that he has a few tricks up his sleeves. It really attempts to be a witty comedy, but fails pretty badly. It's really hard to picture Janet Leigh as a lawyer, and in this, it just doesn't work for her. I'm not a huge fan of hers, so I really wish they had cast someone else in the role of Lucy. I thought Peter, was so charmingly fun and witty, and he was the best part of this movie. Richard Anderson, who plays Lucy's fiancé is pretty funny. I feel that this movie, didn't really develop a bond between the two main characters, and that there wasn't much chemistry there.

Vigil in the Night stars Carole Lombard, Brian Aherne, Anne Shirley, and Peter Cushing in this 1940, George Stevens film. After taking the blame for her sister, Anne Lee(Lombard) transfers to another hospital. When she shows up to the hospital, no one knows about her past, and it looks like everything make work out for the better except it doesn't. A nurse who worked with her at the previous hospital, tries to tell the head nurse about what occurred, but an accidents happens. After the accident, Anne is promoted and once again, things are looking better but once again, her life is thrown off. Her life is never quite normal and is constantly filled with scandal. All Anne, is trying to do, is her job but with her past constantly catching up to her, its difficult to think of the future. Anne's sister, Lucy(Shirley) never takes the blame for what happens, and instead allows her older sister, Anne to be ridiculed for it. It's a good melodrama with a smashing cast. Carole plays the sweet and determined Anne, whose only wish in life is to do her job to her best ability. She is so selfless, and even if it hurts her reputation and career, she will do it, because she knows it'll help her sister. With a rather small role in this, Anne Shirley was wonderful, but I wish she was in it a tad more. Brian Ahern was excellent as always!

Arise, My Love stars Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, and Dennis O' Keefe in this 1940, Mitchell Leisen film. Augusta Nash(Colbert) rescues Tom Martin(Milland) after he is held in a Spanish prison. Explaining to the people holding Tom captive, that she is his wife, they let him go, only to realize after that she isn't. The two narrowly escape and they fly off to Paris, where Augusta is expected to deliver her story. Augusta, is very career oriented and when she rescues Tom, she has no idea, that Tom fell instantly for her. I feel that the first half of this movie, was really quite funny and good, but then towards the end, it really began to drag. The storyline kind of went all over the place, at that point, and that's where I lost interest. I thought, Claudette and Ray were perfectly charming and sweet together, but I just wish that the ending turned out differently.
