365 Movies: Bachelor Mother Review

Bachelor Mother stars Ginger Rogers, David Niven, Frank Albertson, and Charles Coburn in this delightfully sweet 1939 film. The film is about Polly Parrish(Rogers), an employee of Merlin's Department Store, who's life goes in an unexpected direction, when she finds a baby on a step. Immediately people believe the child is Polly's but there is nothing that Polly can do, to prove otherwise. It gets so bad, that her employer David Merlin(Niven) gets involved. This is about the sweetest and most adorable Ginger Rogers movie I've ever seen in my life. Each and every time, I see though, its like it's brand new to me. I find that I can quote quite a lot of the lines from the movie, such as "I don't care, who the father is, I'm the grandfather!" or "This Christmas or Last Christmas?". This film is so much fun to watch and Rogers and Niven make about the cutest couple!

I actually have two favorite shows: one being a modern show and the other being a retro show. First, let me say my favorite modern show is CSI. I've been watching that show since it came on, way back when I was 11 years old(I'm turning 21 in August!) I've been a dedicated fan to the show for so long and I don't think I'll ever quit watching this show. Now, for my favorite retro show, it has to be That Girl. That show makes my day, even when I watch reruns of episodes I've already seen. Marlo Thomas is absolutely darling in the role of Ann Marie.

365 Movies: Shadow of the Thin Man Review

Shadow of the Thin Man stars William Powell, Myrna Loy, Barry Nelson, Donna Reed, and Sam Levene in the fourth installment of The Thin Man Series. The film came out in 1941 and this was the last Thin Man movie, that W.S. Van Dyke directed. The film is about a jockey being found dead and once again, Nick Charles(Powell) is on the case. This time, though his wife Nora, wants to be more involved in solving the case, which in that case, Nick needs to avert her attention in one way or another to something else. This was another great Thin Man movie, but I felt it didn't have as much as humor and wit, as the other three did. It came off more serious and there weren't as many cracks in the film as three previous ones. Even though, I thought it was quite unnecessary to bring a child into the film series, that little boy is pretty darn cute.

- Hands down, my favorite movie is "The Lady Eve"(1941). The entire cast is absolute perfection and it's the funniest movie, I've ever seen. No matter, what kind of mood I'm in, I can watch this movie and still enjoy it immensely. In my book, it's the perfect movie!

365 Movies: Another Thin Man Review

Another Thin Man stars William Powell, Myrna Loy, Virginia Grey, Otto Kruger, Tom Neal, Nat Pendleton, C.Aubrey Smith, and Patric Knowles in the third installment of The Thin Man Series, directed by W.S. Van Dyke III. The film came out in 1939 and is about married sleuths Nick(Powell) and Nora(Loy) Charles getting tangled in yet another case. This time, the case is about Colonel MacFay(Smith) who fears his life is in danger, so he calls Nick to help protect him. This is another fine example of how perfect Powell and Loy are together. They work so amazingly well together and the silly little jokes between the two is wonderful to watch. This movie fits right into the humor and wit, that the first two films had. Even with a brief appearance in the film, I loved seeing Patric Knowles in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I can't wait to see it again!

365 Movies: Artists and Models Review

Artists and Models stars Jack Benny, Ida Lupino, Richard Arlen, and Gail Patrick in this 1937 musical comedy, directed Raoul Walsh. The film is about adman Mac Brewster(Benny) who is trying to impress a client of his, Alan Townshend(Arlen). He attempts to get his client to hire a model of his, Paula Sewell(Lupino) but just hearing of her, Alan is not interested. After hearing about this, Paula wants to meet the man who turned her down, so she goes down to Miami, where he's going to be at. I liked about 50% of this movie. The parts with Benny, Lupino, Arlen, and Patrick were wonderful but I absolutely hated the parts with Judy Canova and Ben Blue. I really felt they weren't needed in this movie and the random moments between them were very bizarre. The scenes between Arlen and Lupino were so sweet and I enjoyed seeing Benny and Patrick as a couple. Benny is so hysterical in this film and I loved the little jokes that he and Gail were saying about Jack Benny on the radio.

365 Movies: Ruggles of Red Gap Review

Ruggles of Red Gap stars Charles Laughton, Charlie Ruggles, Zasu Pitts, Mary Boland, Leila Hyams, and Roland Young in this 1935 comedy, directed by Leo McCarey. The film is about servant Marmaduke Ruggles(Laughton) who finds out that he is no longer employed by his current boss, after his boss lost him in a bet. He finds out his new employer is an american man named Egbert Floud(Ruggles) and he is set to leave with the Floud's very shortly to Red Gap, Washington. Along the journey, Ruggles shows Egbert, how to properly dress and act, while his boss, shows him how to enjoy life, even though, Mrs. Floud greatly despises his "idiotic" ways. This was such a silly and fun movie to watch and I loved seeing Charles Laughton in such a different role, from what I'm used to seeing. He was so goofy and loose and it was absolutely fun to watch him portray a character, so different from his other roles. I did feel that Mary Boland can get on my nerves a bit, especially with her high pitched squeals. Leila has a rather small role in this film but I did love seeing her once again. She is so utterly beautiful in this film!

365 Movies: The Big House Review

The Big House stars Chester Morris, Wallace Beery, Robert Montgomery, and Leila Hyams in this 1930 film. The film is about three prisoners and the lives they live in the prison. John Morgan(Morris) and Butch(Beery) are as close as brothers but when trouble maker Kent Marlowe(Montgomery) comes between the two's friendship, anger arises. On the eve of his pardon, John is accused of concealing a weapon and is sentenced longer because Kent set him up. This is an excellent prison film and I found it quite interesting that MGM came out with this film, and not Warner Brothers, who was known for prison films. I loved the friendship between Morris' John and Beery's Butch; they would be friends until the end and no one could get between that friendship. I thought that it was very cool to see Montgomery as such a weak character. He seems unable to stand up on his own and uses other people's faults to gain from it. Even with a small role, I appreciated seeing Leila Hyam's delicate approach as Anne Marlowe, Kent's sister.

365 Movies: Brideshead Revisited Review

Brideshead Revisited stars Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Ben Whishaw, and Emma Thompson in this 2008 film. The film is about young Oxford student, Charles Ryder(Goode) who complicates the lives of Julia(Atwell) and Sebastian(Whishaw). While young Charles has no beliefs, the two people he cares deeply for do. They are devout Catholics and with his no religion, unhappiness arises. The film is good but I feel that it's way too long for my liking. The entire cast are superb to watch and Atwell and Goode had amazing chemistry.

365 Movies: The Big Sleep Review

The Big Sleep stars Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Martha Vickers, and Dorothy Malone in this 1946 film, directed by Howard Hawks. The film is about private eye, Philip Marlowe(Bogart)is hired by a rich elder man but things become far more complicated, than they started out as. Philip gets entangled in murder and blackmail and once he's in, there's no way out for him. The film has excellent dialog! It's witty and sarcastic but absolutely wonderful. The film seems to spin around in circles and had me confused me at times. It's a good suspense film but like I said, it can be confusing.

365 Movies: The Maltese Falcon Review

The Maltese Falcon stars Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet in this 1941 film, directed by John Huston. The film is about Private Eye, Sam Spade(Bogart) who takes severals cases that are all linked together. He meets Brigid O'Shaughnessy(Astor) a conniving woman who plays up the innocent tricks, to get her way, and a group of men all trying to get their dirty hands on the maltese falcon. It's a marvelous film noir but several times, I was lost and confused. I didn't exactly get why everyone was so interested in the falcon and when they discover it's not what they thought it was, they just walk away from it, like it's no big deal. That confused me quite a bit. Humphrey Bogart is Sam Spade and seriously no one, and I mean no one could have played that role. Last night, I watched Lee Patrick in "Caged" and thought she was absolutely marvelous in that film, and in this film, she does it again. An absolutely underrated and talented actress, that had quite a versatility from her role in "Caged" to her role in "The Maltese Falcon".

365 Movies: Caged Review

Caged stars Eleanor Parker and Agnes Moorehead in this 1950 drama. The film is about 19 year old, Marie Allen(Moorehead) who is put into prison after unknowingly being an accessory to a robbery. During the robbery, Marie's husband is killed and Marie is then, thrown into the slammer. This is a very powerful and deep film that literally gave me goosebumps, while I watched it. Without a doubt, this is Eleanor's best role, she really does a superb job as the innocent girl, hardened up by prison. This film gave me chills because it was so realistic and sad to watch but without a doubt, an excellent film.

365 Movies: The Body Disappears Review

The Body Disappears stars Jeffrey Lynn, Edward Everett Horton, Jane Wyman, and Willie Best in this 1941 film. On the eve of his wedding day, Peter De Haven III(Lynn) disappears..... literally! While trying out an experiment to bring the dead back to life, Professor Shotesbury(Horton) accidentally makes Peter invisible! A whole slew of craziness occurs for Peter but in the end, he finds out what truly matters to him. This is such a daffy and goofy movie that I just enjoyed it. I didn't take the film too seriously, which  wasn't meant to be serious and I had a great time watching it. The only downfall to it, is that Jeffrey is invisible 90% of the time, so you don't get to see his handsome face. Other than that, I thought it was quite a fun movie to watch.

365 Movies: Three for the Show Review

Three for the Show stars Betty Grable, Jack Lemmon, and Marge and Gower Champion in this 1955 musical. The film is about Julie Lowndes(Grable) who finds out her first husband(whom she believed died) is alive and well and doesn't know, she is married to his best friend! The film is a remake of the classic 1940 film, "Too Many Husbands"(that starred Jean Arthur and Melvyn Douglas) and is similar to the 1940 film "My Favorite Wife"(that starred Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, with the roles reversed!) I absolutely adore this version, even though they turned it into a musical. I just find the entire cast absolutely adorable and sweet and it's fun to watch, the four of them bickering at one another. It's a fun film to watch, that left me smiling at the end. Jack, Betty, Marge, and Gower are the perfect examples of absolute cuteness! Out of the versions that were made, my favorite is the 1940, "Too Many Husbands", but this comes in a close second. So delightfully fun!

365 Movies: Down to Earth Review

Down to Earth stars Rita Hayworth, Larry Parks, and Marc Platt in this 1947 musical. The film is about Goddess Terpsichore(Hayworth) who hears about a play, that is being done about herself and other goddesses. Completely dissatisfied with the thought of a play being done on her, Terpsichore goes down to earth to resolve the mess, but her heart gets tangled in a mess instead! This movie is so very silly but nonetheless it's entertaining. To me, it seemed Marc Platt had the most personality and energy compared to the rest of the cast. Larry dragged a little bit to me but he's not all that bad of an actor. The dance sequences are fun to watch but it's all over the place. If the play was ever made, I doubt anyone would see it, because of the constant changing and movements! It was very nutty! Rita's Terpsichore is a very strange and odd character, who shifts her personality too much for my liking.

365 Movies: Jupiter's Darling Review

Jupiter's Darling stars Esther Williams, Howard Keel, and Marge and Gower Champion in this 1955 film, directed by George Sidney. The film is about Amytis(Williams) who is engaged to Fabius Maximus but is truly unhappy with how life is going for her. When she hears about Hannibal, she feels an extreme urge to meet him. The film is just sooooooo corny, it was difficult to watch this movie without laughing at it(even at the parts, that weren't meant to be funny!) There isn't many actresses that I get irritated by but Esther Williams is one of them. I just can't come around to liking her. I do agree, she's a very talented swimmer but other than that, I don't see the hoopla about her. Even with the ridiculousness of the movie, Marge and Gower were adorable to watch. I really think, they would have been more popular in the 1940's than in the 1950's. This movie is also quite embarrassing for George Sanders, it's almost like his character has no backbone. It's quite sad!

365 Movies: Georgy Girl Review

Georgy Girl stars Lynn Redgrave, Alan Bates, and James Mason in this 1966 film. The film is about Georgy(Redgrave) who feels like an outcast because of her appearance. She feels that she's alone but when two men, come into life- one with fun and excitement, while the other being a mature, well-to do married man. Georgy's heart is torn between the two men and in the end, she grows up. This is such a marvelous film and I can relate to it quite a bit. Though, my appearance is different from her's, I do feel sometimes like I'm the odd man out. Georgy Girl is definitely one of my favorite films and the entire cast delivers their best!

365 Movies: Female Review

Female stars Ruth Chatterton, George Brent, and Ruth Donnelly in this 1933 film, directed by Michael Curtiz. The film is about power house, Alison Drake(Chatterton) treats men, the same way, she believes they treat her. She's an independent wise cracking, tough gal but when her heart gets in the middle of things, complications arise. The film is quite saucy but it's a tad sexist. It had quite a conventional ending especially for the time, which irritated me quite a bit. I'm honestly, not a big fan of Ruth. I think she comes off too chatty for my liking but she and George are steamy together!

365 Movies: And One was Beautiful Review

And One was Beautiful stars Laraine Day, Robert Cummings, and Jean Muir in this 1940 MGM film. The film is about high society gal who accidentally kills someone and blames it on a family friend, without realizing the consequences that are to come. Laraine Day plays the tomboy sister, who believes that Ridley(Cummings) didn't do it and tries to prove it. Even though, this is a B film, it's a pretty good film. I had seen this film before, and I liked it then as well. Robert and Laraine are a charming couple to watch! Jean can be a little over the top but it's tolerable to watch.
